Aer Lingus hasn't been languishing on its Atlantic isle. Ireland's national airline flies passengers (about 7 million a year) and cargo, serving about 35 destinations in Ireland, the UK, the US, and continental Europe. Aer Lingus has phased out the Boeing aircraft in its fleet and plans on operating only Airbus shorthaul jets by 2005. The move is part of the carrier's plan to position itself as a low-fare airline, which have been springing up around Europe. The Irish state, which owns Aer Lingus, has been back and forth on whether to sell a minority stake in the airline.
